Pinedale Middle School students calculate answers at the recent 2009 Wyoming State MATHCOUNTS competition held at the University of Wyoming. Students are (from left): Mark Fenn, Troy Covill, Ginger Shenefelt and Ali Wadsworth.
Open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, MATHCOUNTS helps students understand how math is important to solve problems in everyday life, says Jeffrey Anderson, state MATHCOUNTS coordinator in the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).
The top four individual winners earn the opportunity to represent Wyoming at the recent 2009 National MATHCOUNTS competition in Fort Orlando, Fla. This year’s top four winners were students from Laramie and Centennial (Casper) Junior High Schools.
