Kids Fishing Day at the CCC Ponds June 6
by Wyoming Game & Fish
June 4, 2009

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will host Kids Fishing Day events in Pinedale and Jackson on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

As in past years, the event in Pinedale will be held at the CCC Ponds north of Pinedale with registration starting at 10:00AM. All kids 13 and under are invited to participate. Parents are invited to come share in the fun too and may learn a few tips themselves.

There will be short educational activities, a free lunch and the opportunity to catch trout freshly stocked in the pond. Some fishing gear and worms will be available, if needed. The entire event is free of charge.

To get there, take the road to Lakeside Lodge at Fremont Lake and follow the signs for CCC Ponds. The local Trout Unlimited chapter will provide a free hotdog and hamburger lunch. The event is planned to conclude at 3 PM.

Adult volunteers are always needed at the event to be "fishing guides" for the kids. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, contact Darren Rhea or Pete Cavalli at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department at 307-367-4353 or Joe Neal at the Bridger-Teton National Forest at 307-367-5730.

This year, the Jackson event will be held at the Snow King ball field at the base of Snow King Mountain. The event could not be held at the Jackson National Fish Hatchery, as in past years, because it is currently under reconstruction.

There will be short educational activities, a free hot dog lunch provided by the Jackson Jaycees and free fishing pole provided to every kid who attends. Registration begins at 10:30AM. "Unfortunately, the kids will not be able to actually fish at this year’s event," said Jackson Fish Biologist and event coordinator, Tracy Stephens. "But everyone will receive a free fishing pole, so they can go practice what they’ve learned and try their luck at one of the many area lakes or streams."

Saturday, June 6, is also Free Fishing Day across the state of Wyoming. Both residents and nonresidents alike can fish for free in Wyoming with no license required all day. The free fishing day was authorized in 2003 by the Wyoming State Legislature.

Free fishing day applies to all waters in Wyoming with the exception that fishing licenses are required in Yellowstone National Park and the Wind River Indian Reservation. All fishing regulations such as creel and size limits, gear restrictions, fishing hours and stream closures still apply.

Free Fishing Day is held in conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week, May 31-June 7, and is designed to provide an opportunity for people to get reacquainted with fishing and enjoy Wyoming’s outstanding fishing opportunities. More details on Free Fishing Day are listed in the Wyoming fishing regulations booklet and on the Wyoming Game and Fish website (http://gf.state.wy.us/ ), under Fish and Fishing.

There are Kids Fishing Day events being held across Wyoming in the next few weeks.
