Missy Raines and The New Hip to rock Legion Park July 17
Local band The Science Rockets to open
by Pinedale Fine Arts Council
July 16, 2009
The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present Compass Records bluegrass/jazz ensemble Missy Raines and The New Hip performing live on Friday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the American Legion Park. Local alt-country band The Science Rockets will play a short opening set.
A beloved figure in bluegrass and a pioneering force in acoustic music, Missy Raines' adventurous musical spirit has always been her compass. Launching her career with experimental bluegrass outfit Cloud Valley, Raines next toured the country with Eddie and Martha Adcock. Soon she was lending her bass skills to the Masters (Adcock, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves and Jesse McReynolds). Raines joined Claire Lynch's popular Front Porch Band and developed a successful duo with band mate Jim Hurst.
Born in Short Gap, W.Va., Raines grew up jumping from festival to festival, jamming all the way. Her career circumscribed the traditional bluegrass map. Before long, she was incorporating elements of jazz and rock into her country sound.
Raines now performs with her backing band The New Hip. The New Hip’s name is at once a subtle tribute to "Birth Of The Cool," the heraldic 1950 album by Miles Davis that Raines cherishes, as well as a wry joke about a life-changing surgery that has allowed Raines to play in her famously physical style without pain for the first time in decades. That liberation resembles the musical freedom enjoyed by this young and vibrant band. The New Hip lets Raines compose and exchange ideas with four players ranging in age from 17 to 27 who grew up enthralled by traditional American roots music and its modern offshoots, just like their boss.
Opening for Raines and The New Hip will be Pinedale alt-country band, The Science Rockets who are comprised of a number of local singer/songwriters and musicians. Since forming earlier this year, the Science Rockets have played multiple local gigs in Pinedale and the surrounding area.
The July 17 show is presented as a free event by the Pinedale Fine Arts Council (though donations are greatly appreciated). The Town of Pinedale and the Sublette County Recreation Board also helped support this event. As this is a park setting, please feel free to bring a chair, cooler and don’t forget sunscreen!
