South Pass Rest Area closes for improvements starting Aug. 24

A rest area improvement project has started in northwest Wyoming, and the South Pass Rest Area will be closed until further notice beginning Monday, Aug. 24, according to Erik Smith, Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer in Lander.
The South Pass Rest Area is located at milepost 34 on Wyoming 28 near the Sweetwater River, more than 45 miles south of Lander.
"Travelers will need to make alternate rest stop plans during this closure," Smith said. "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the improvements will improve our ability to serve the public at the rest area and others in northwest Wyoming."
L.M. Olson, Inc., of Rawlins is the prime contractor on the $2.2 million rest area improvement project. Improvements are also planned at the Sweetwater Station Rest Area on U.S. 287 southeast of Lander and south of Riverton, Diversion Dam Rest Area between Riverton and Dubois on U.S. 26-287, Waltman Rest Area between Shoshoni and Casper on U.S. 20-26, Gooseberry Rest Area between Thermopolis and Meeteetse on Wyoming 120, and Greybull Rest Area on U.S. 14-16-20 northwest of Greybull.
The northwest Wyoming rest area improvement project includes building demolition, additions and other upgrades to existing buildings, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; and site improvements and modifications, including storm sewer, sidewalks, picnic arbor modifications, masonry, landscaping, playgrounds, and other work.
The rest area improvement project is being funded through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Completion date for the project is Aug. 27, 2010.
