by Sublette Board of Cooperative Education Services
August 5, 2009
Sublette BOCES in Pinedale has lined up numerous activities and opportunities for children and adults during the month of August. From art to hunter safety to doing your own hair, the community education classes are geared towards having fun while learning.
The month started with the return of the Miss Manners class along with a new short course called Simply Sewing, in which participants were exposed to basic sewing techniques while making fun projects like an ipod holder and a pillow case and more.
Next week is Art Camp for Kids from Aug. 10 to 14, with two sessions for two age groups. Participants ages 9 and up will meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday while younger participants, ages 5-8, will meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The art campers will delve into color to create a color wheel, a personal journal and a tie-dye project during this weeklong activity.
For adults, the GPS course is back with background on the device as well as hands-on application to get you ready to head out in time for hunting season.
Then get ready for Cookie Decorating and Geocaching. Ages 5 and up will dress to make a mess for two nights, Aug. 17 and 19, of cookie decorating while those 12 and older can take part in the modern version of treasure hunting using a GPS with the Introduction to Geocaching class, Aug. 18 and 20.
Learning to do your own hair is on the schedule again with morning sessions on Aug. 18 and 20 for ages 7 and up as they learn how to use curling irons. In the evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., moms can bring a curling iron and a daughter to learn some fun new hairstyles.
And there’s still more, ages 5 to 10 can take up a second language with the children’s Sign Language class Aug. 24-27. Children will learn the alphabet, a song and common phrases over the four days.
CPR and First Aid will also be offered by BOCES during the month of August with CPR instruction on Aug. 24 and First Aid on Aug. 25, with the first session Hunter Safety commencing on Aug. 25.
Hunter Safety is a six-night class, with participants required to attend five nights for ages over 14 and all six nights for those 14 and under. The class will go from 5:40 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25, 26 and 27 and then Sept. 1, 2 and 3.
