Congressman wants unused funds to be used to cut deficit

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., is calling for a halt to the spending portion of the Obama-Pelosi "stimulus" package and allocations made from the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP).
Lummis supports a plan, H.R. 3140, the REBOUND Act, to require the remaining $150 billion of $700 billion in TARP funding, as well as $460 billion left from the stimulus package to be funneled toward cutting this year’s projected $1.8 trillion deficit.
"Millions of Americans find themselves out of work, struggling to make their house payments and provide for their families," Lummis said. "Their government should not be adding to their pain by unloading the largest deficit in this nation’s history onto their shoulders.
"By re-directing the unspent funds from the stimulus package and TARP, we can reduce this year’s deficit by more than $600 billion, while at the same time leaving tax relief and unemployment benefits in place.
"This Administration’s appetite for spending must stop. Out-of-control government spending is not the answer to creating good-paying jobs and improving the economic climate. In fact, it is only making matters worse in the long-term.
"Each American is on the hook for about $35,000 due to the national debt. Under the policies initiated by this Congress, that amount will double to $70,000 in just eight years. Doubling the debt is not the solution to our economic woes, nor is it fair to the millions of hard working taxpayers.
"The path to our economic recovery starts with fiscal responsibility in Washington. It is high time for the government to start tightening the budget and eliminating wasteful spending. The future of America depends on it."
