December 2, 2009
In a special report under the heading "Energy Fix," CNNMoney.com posted an article today (Wednesday, December 2) by staff writer Steve Hargreaves entitled, "The domestic drilling backlash: From New York to Texas, energy companies have come under fire as natural gas drilling gets close to big cities.". The article discusses growing public concern about protecting ground water quality as natural gas drilling encroaches closer and closer to residential areas.
"…energy companies, accustomed to dealing with rural populations familiar with drilling and eager for jobs and lease royalties, are increasingly finding themselves at odds with a more educated and wealthy populace wary of energy development," the article says.
The story resurrects excerpts from a 14-month-old CNN video from an article by the same author in October 2008 that features industry workers and a number of Sublette County residents who were interviewed discussing the challenges and struggles facing Pinedale in the height of the natural gas boom in Sublette County.
The original video interviewed Randy Teeuwen (spokesman for EnCana USA), environmental activist Linda Baker (Upper Green River Valley Coalition), Shane Thompson (owner of Half Moon Motel), Bob Barrett (local hunter), Chuck Otto (Pinedale BLM Field Manager), Travis Bing (High Mountain Real Estate), Brent Leyerly (former Pinedale resident), Sara Domek (Pinedale resident), Vern McAdams (Business Director for Sublette County School District #1), Carl Grove (Drilling Supervisor, EnCana USA), and Jeff VanGundy (Driller, Ensign).
