Barrasso statement on President Obama’s Rural America speeches
‘If the President really wants to help rural America, he should simply cut bureaucratic red tape.’
by Senator John Barrasso media release
April 27, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – Today (April 27, 2010), Senate Western Caucus Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) released the following statement regarding President Obama’s visit to rural America:

"In 2008, President-elect Obama promised to hold a bipartisan rural summit during his first 100 days in office. Unfortunately, this promise remains unfulfilled. Instead of receiving an invitation to work together, lawmakers from rural areas have watched this Administration roll out more red tape in our communities.

"The President’s Department of the Interior continues to place more bureaucratic hurdles in rural communities. In January, it announced onshore oil and gas leasing reforms that will increase bureaucracy, stifle job creation, and hurt states’ budgets. The Department is also considering locking up at least 13 million acres of land in 11 Western states. If they move forward with their plan to deny access to public lands for their economic and recreational use, they will destroy rural America’s future.

"His Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to reach even further into our lives. Its Endangerment Finding will allow EPA to tax everything rural Americans do, from driving their cars to powering their farms and other small businesses. The EPA also strongly supports complete federal regulation of all waters in every State, from prairie potholes to puddles and playas. This allows the federal government to inject itself in rural life like never before.

"If the President really wants to help rural America, he should simply cut bureaucratic red tape. Washington should get out of the way so rural Americans can grow their businesses, create new jobs, and provide for their families and their communities."
