NWS to promote severe weather safety April 19-23, 2010

The week of April 19 through 23 has been designated as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wyoming. National Weather Service offices serving Wyoming use the week to promote weather safety, preparedness plans, and to test statewide communications systems.
In advance of the thunderstorm season, April provides an excellent time for individuals, families, businesses, and schools to review their preparedness plans. NWS officials encourage people to take time to learn more about severe weather and the associated hazards that impact their area.
"Tornadoes, flash floods, damaging wind, and hail are possible all across Wyoming. We have documented tornadoes in the mountains, and terrain and urban development make flash flooding a possibility just about anywhere," said Chris Jones, warning coordination meteorologist at the Riverton NWS office. "People need to know how to obtain weather alerts, whether through NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts, local media outlets, or monitoring the situation on the web at weather.gov/riverton."
In a test of statewide alerting capabilities, a test Tornado Warning will be issued on Wednesday, April 21 at 10:30 am for the entire state of Wyoming. Businesses, schools and local, state and federal government agencies should use this as a drill of their own procedures for what they do when severe weather threatens. The test will also allow emergency alert system equipped media outlets to test their ability to relay weather alerts.
While the peak thunderstorm season may still be a month away, the NWS points out it is never to early to familiarize yourself with the dangers of thunderstorms. Become aware of upcoming hazardous weather by using the theme, "Ready, Set, Go."
Ready - Monitor NWS Hazardous Weather Outlooks 7 days in advance. The potential for hazardous weather will be outlined along with any uncertainty in the forecast.
Set - As confidence increases, watches will be issued to give you a heads up that you need to be prepared for the possibility of severe weather within the next 8 hours.
Go - Warnings will be issued when the NWS is confident that a storm is producing severe weather. Seek shelter now if you are in the path of the storm.
