High Tunnel workshop

Over 24 people braved the nasty weather Friday and Saturday for the High Tunnel workshop put on by Jeff Edwards from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension.
The group erected two high tunnel greenhouses that will be managed by the Pinedale Afterschool Program as a youth entrepreneur venture for the program.
The project is funded by Serve Wyoming as a Learn and Serve service learning project for the Sublette County 4-H Afterschool programs.
In conjunction with interested community members, the program youth will learn about sustainability and food production including food preservation techniques.
During the summer months, the structures will be available for community members to utilize, while during the school year, the Afterschool program will use them to grow produce to donate to the local food basket and sell at the Farmer’s Market.
The high tunnels are located just east of the new Pinedale Elementary School in the Bloomfield neighborhood.
Future plans for the area include Eagle Scout projects that will build raised beds for the houses as well as assist in the building of a storage building for gardening tools and supplies. In addition, future plans include the use of wind and solar power to support the structures as well as serve as educational demonstrations for the community.
The project hopes to serve the Pinedale community by providing educational resources as well as a gathering point for those who enjoy gardening. Anyone interested in volunteering or participating in any aspect of the project can call the Extension Office at 307-367-4380.
