Here’s the latest update on area campgrounds, as of June 18, 2010:
Green River Lakes: CLOSED Green River Lakes Recreation Site and Campground is CLOSED for public use due to tree removal operations. This includes the access road, boat launch, trails, and trailhead. The expected opening date for these facilities is Friday, June 25,2010. Green River Lakes Campground is not expected to open until Friday, July 2, 2010, at the earliest, due to tree removal needs.
Whiskey Grove Campground: CLOSED This campground in the Upper Green is not expected to open until July 15, 2010, at the earliest.
Fremont Lake Campground: OPEN This campground is open and water services have been restored. Full fees are again being charged to stay at this campground.
Elkhart Park: OPEN The paved road is open all the way to the top to the trailhead and campground. No water services are available due to repairs needed for frozen and broken water pipes. Hikers should expect to run into snow pretty quickly on the trails into the high country.
Big Sandy: OPEN The road into Big Sandy is open with just a couple of wet spots. No flooding on the Lander Cut-off road portion. The high trails and passes are still snowed in. Jackass Pass into the Cirque of the Towers is NOT open yet. Hikers can expect to run into snow fairly quickly going into the wilderness on the high-elevation trails. High country lakes are still frozen.
Sacajawea (Big Piney Ranger District): OPEN Sacajawea Campground opens on Friday, June 18. The cost is $7.00 per night and drinking water is available.
Most campground spots are first-come, first-served. Some spots and group areas are reservable in advance. Click here for the federal online reservation system, http://www.recreation.gov/, or call toll free 1-877-444-6777.
Roads: The Union Pass Road is OPEN over the top, but expect to run into some snow and wet/muddy road at the top and on the Dubois side. Some spots are slow going, but it is passable now.
The McDougal Gap road is OPEN into the Greys River drainage.
The Strawberry Road is CLOSED (Forest Service Road # 1083 in the Greys River drainage of the Wyoming Range) CLOSED temporarily due to construction. The road will be closed from 8:00 am Monday, June 21 through 5:00 pm Tuesday, June 22 so that the water system for the town of Bedford can be installed.
