The water flow Green and New Fork Rivers are moderating and the water clarity is very good, so we can now expect some good production on these two major waterways in our area.
This spring’s weather pattern produced an unusually late run-off, and the water temperatures are still a little on the cool side particularly in the early part of the day. This has led to some sluggish feeding patterns on the two larger rivers.
The smaller streams are starting to look real good and should present some excellent fishing opportunities, particularly later in the day when the surface temperatures increase.
Speaking of surface temperatures, we are still experiencing fairly cool night and morning temperatures which inhibit some hatch activities in this time-frame. When we do get a couple days of summer type temperatures the hatches are perfuse, featuring grey drakes in the early part of the day and some caddis hatches in the late afternoons.
The cooler than normal spring has delayed the arrival of the big hopper. I have seen a few small ones, but the big boys are not out in numbers yet. Do not let this condition prevent you from using a hopper pattern because the trout will still feed on this fly.
The surface action has certainly picked up the past few days, so arm yourself with grey drakes, caddis, and your favorite adams pattern, sizes 14- 10. Hopper profile patterns like the bugmeisters or pmx sizes 12-8 will work well on all our streams, and always trail these patterns with a small nymph like a prince, rubber legged or plain copper john, sizes 16-12. The Schroeder parachute hopper will work well in the next several weeks, sizes 14-10.
