Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. recently concluded its annual employee giving campaign, Encana Cares, raising over $1.6 million for charity; another new record for its U.S. division.

Launched in the U.S. in 2006, Encana Cares is an employee-driven program where cash contributions are matched for any registered non-profit organization that is meaningful to employees and their families.

More than $37,000 will be distributed to 35 different charitable organizations in Wyoming. The largest grant of $6,600 was pledged to A Woman’s Work in Big Piney.

Through Encana Cares, Lease Operator Ben Jenkins and his family contribute to A Woman’s Work, a charity that offers immediate assistance to women and their families in need.

"My wife introduced me to this organization," said Jenkins. "It helps women in difficult times get through various situations by providing funds for rent, utility bills, doctor bills and other expenses. A Woman’s Work strives to improve lives, and our family is honored to support this effort."

Encana Cares is held every October, and since the company covers all associated administrative costs, 100 percent of the contribution goes directly to the charity. The cash contributions are matched dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 per employee per year.

Jenkins not only donates to the charity, but also wears a chef’s hat, preparing and cooking food for A Woman’s Work events like the Men’s Cook-off and the Lip Sync Contest.

"It’s hard to express the feeling I get from helping others," said Jenkins. "Knowing that our family has helped a single mother who is trying her hardest to survive, raise her kids and better their lives – it’s just a great feeling."

Regulatory Analyst Karen Olsen contributes to the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer, not just for Encana Cares, but also to support those fighting the battle.

"It is so difficult to watch someone you love lose the fight," said Olsen. "We must never stop searching for a cure, and the Encana Cares program allows me to do that. My donation will support research, help save lives and create hope for those who are suffering. I have faith that we will find the cure."

2010 Encana Cares Key Stats:
• 831 – number of US employees enrolled in Encana Cares
• 740 – number of charities that will receive funding
• $37,100 – amount pledged and donated by Wyoming employees
• $880,773.50 – amount pledged and donated by all employees
• $1,601,547 – total raised with Encana’s match

Corporate giving is a staple and priority in the Encana culture. As one of North America’s leading independent natural gas producers, Encana annually contributes one percent of pre-tax profits back to the communities where its employees live and work.

Last year, Encana Cares contributed $5.9 million to charitable and non-profit organizations in the US, including more than $1.17 million in Wyoming.
