Residents should act soon to save on energy efficient appliance purchases

The State Energy Office reminds Wyoming residents to take advantage of rebates for energy efficient appliance purchases while funds still remain.

As of Dec. 6, only 20 percent of the funds allocated to the program were still available.

"Rebates are honored on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we want to encourage residents to get their rebate information in so they don’t miss out on this great opportunity," said Heather Tupper, Wyoming State Energy Office grants and contracts specialist.

The Wyoming Appliance Rebate Program, managed by the State Energy Office (SEO) and funded by the federal 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), aims to capture valuable energy savings and spur economic growth around the state. Rebates are available for replacement of older appliances with new, ENERGY STAR-qualifying clothes washers, dishwashers, water heaters, and furnaces. The rebates range from $50 to $250 depending on the product.

In addition, a federal tax credit for qualifying furnaces and water heaters may be available for purchases made in 2010. More information may be found on www.wyomingrebates.com under the tab "Frequently Asked Questions."

"The deadline for federal tax credits for energy efficient purchases is the end of December," said Tupper. "So, residents hoping to take advantage of that program should act quickly."

Tupper also encourages residents to check with local utility companies, as they may be offering additional incentives for energy efficient purchases.

As of Nov. 30, the state had issued nearly 3,200 rebates to Wyoming consumers totaling more than $281,500. About $511,000 was initially allocated to the program.

The SEO estimates a Wyoming household would save about $132 a year by replacing a 20-year old gas furnace with a new, ENERGY STAR qualified unit.
