A total lunar eclipse will take place on Monday night, December 20th. It will be visible after midnight Eastern Standard Time on December 21 in North and South America, cloud cover permitting. It will be the first total lunar eclipse in nearly 3 years. The last total lunar eclipse was on February 20, 2008.
According to NASA, the best viewing time will be 03:17 am EST (17 minutes past midnight PST), when the moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shades of coppery red.
