Using dogs to protect livestock from wolves and bears
Sublette County couple tours Europe and Central Asia for ideas to help US ranchers
December 21, 2010

The Casper Star-Tribune posted an article by Jeff Gerino on Dec. 19th profiling a Sublette County couple who have spent years researching the use of dogs to protect livestock from predators.

Cat and Jim Urbigkit traveled to Europe and Central Asia during October to visit and interview livestock producers who use dogs for predator control in areas with dense wolf and bear populations. The Urbigkits have a ranch east of Big Piney in Sublette County. They have been using livestock dogs to protect their own sheep herds for many years, and breed and sell them to other ranchers. Realizing that the current breeds of dogs being used are being killed by wolves and bears, the Urbigkits are looking at other breeds that are able to fend off the attacks to protect themselves and the herds they put their lives on the line to protect.
