An article by Andrew Schenkel on the Mother Nature Network website on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, ran with the headline, "Wyoming town under ozone warning – again." Contrary to Schenkel’s headline, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) did not issue an ozone warning for Pinedale on Tuesday. [Editor's update: There were no ozone advisories for Sublette County in 2010. As of the date of this article, the most recent ozone advisory issued by DEQ was in February 2009.]
When asked about this article, Keith Guille, public affairs spokesperson for DEQ responded, "That title is not accurate. It is not under any warning or advisory at this time. We sent out a reminder/release that we will be conducting Winter Ozone monitoring and forecasting. If it is determined that an advisory is needed, we will send one out the day before. "
DEQ issued a media release on December 22nd saying in preparation for the winter of 2011 they would again be initiating in-house weather forecasting to evaluate conditions which might result in elevated ozone levels in the Upper Green River Valley. "If it is determined that conditions favorable for the development of ozone are likely to occur, DEQ will issue an ozone advisory for the Upper Green River Basin," the release stated.
