Wranglers alpine ski 2nd and 3rd at Cody meet
by Jeff Wohl, PHS Alpine Coach, SCSSA Alpine Coach
January 19, 2011
The Pinedale Wrangler alpine ski team participated in a meet at Cody over the weekend of January 15th & 16th.
The Wrangler boys and girls are nipping at the heels of the Jackson team.
The girl’s Varsity, skiing one skier short, was still able to pull off a solid second place finish. The boys team was a very a close 3rd, right behind a strong Kelly Walsh and Jackson team. The race hill at Red Lodge Mountain is very steep and icy. The challenging conditions took their toll on the team the first day of the race with only two of the four Pinedale varsity girls finishing and only four of the boys. "It is hard for the team to score points with an attrition rate like that," said Coach Jeff Wohl. "If we are going to win meets this year, we will need all of our varsity skiers to finish races without making major mistakes."
"We had some truly outstanding skiing by the team though," Wohl said. Most notably was Senior Jenny Beriermann of Big Piney, with a 3rd place finish on the first day of racing. John Cooney, who missed a first place run by only 6/100ths of a second, ended up 3rd overall. Jep Richie had a good first day, finishing 5th; and Laney Johnston finished 4th the second day after loosening a ski on the first day.
"We do not have the depth on the girl’s side we have had in the past," Wohl said.
A varsity team consists of five skiers. This year, the Wranglers only have four. Wohl said the boy’s team has really come on strong this year. Everyone on the team is really skiing well. Wohl said once the team learns how to ski as fast as the can, and yet still be in control, he expects to see a lot more top three finishes.
"On the JV side, Shelby Duiett gained valuable racing experience on this tough hill. For the JV boys, Dalton Proud skied to a 4th and a 9th, Tyler Morgan was 9th and 18th", Wohl said.
"This Cody meet is always such a treat. The race hill is fun and challenging, really testing the field The Cody team does a great job of hosting the race, and the free skiing after the race is awesome," Wohl said.
The team has a week off to train, then is it off to Casper for one day of Slalom and one day of GS.
