Children's Learning Center begins winter mountain sports program
by Children's Learning Center
February 4, 2011
It used to be that kids would spend their time outside until the sun went down. But with television and technology, many of today's children spend their free time sitting still. We used to talk about kids and use words like "basketball" and "jump rope" - today we are just as likely to use words such as "obesity," "high blood pressure," and diabetes." Teaching children, at an early age, the enjoyment of outdoor sports can prevent a sedentary lifestyle and provide numerous physical and social benefits for a lifetime. The Newfield Foundation has donated $1500 to Children's Learning Center to help fund the cost of cross country skis, snowshoes and adaptive ski and sled equipment for our Pinedale and Big Piney preschool programs. The staffs at both sites are committed to spending time in the outdoors and being active with the children on a daily basis. This program provides physical benefits such as balance, leg strength, coordination, cardiovasular fitness and weight control, as well as social benefits that include discipline, self esteem, feeling of freedom and environmental awareness. Children’s Learning Center is a private non-profit 501(c)3 early educational organization that has been serving the young children of Sublette County since 1977. Children’s Learning Center provides free developmental, hearing and vision screenings and special education for children birth to five years as well as NAEYC accredited inclusive preschool programs for all area children. The preschools are located in Pinedale and Big Piney.
