by Sublette County Prevention Coalition
April 12, 2011
The Sublette County Prevention Coalition, the Gayle McMurry Kinnison Endowment Fund, the Sublette County Sherriff’s Department and the BJA FY 10 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program are co-sponsoring a presentation by Jean Kilbourne to talk about images of women in alcohol and tobacco advertising.
In the late 1960s, she began her exploration of the connection between advertising and several public health issues, including violence against women, eating disorders and addiction. She launched a movement to promote media literacy as a way to prevent these problems.
Kilbourne will be in Sublette County on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27th and 28th:
"Deadly Persuasion" will be a one hour presentation in each high school for the students that highlights what she calls the manipulative marketing strategies and tactics used by the alcohol and tobacco industries to keep people using their products. She will also be addressing the issue of objectification of women in advertising. These presentations will be at the Pinedale High School on Thursday, April 28th at 9:00 AM and at 2:00 PM at the Big Piney High School.
"The Naked Truth" will be 1-½ hour free community presentation, on each side of the county on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27 & 28th. It reviews if and how the image of women has changed over the past 20 years and how many problems today, such as date rape and other forms of violence, eating disorders, and increased rates of drinking and smoking, may be affected by the media. The Pinedale presentation will be on Wednesday, April 27th at the Pinedale Auditorium from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. The Big Piney presentation will be Thursday, April 28th, at the Big Piney Fine Arts Auditorium from 6:00-7:30 PM.
Kilbourne will also be the guest speaker for the Sexual Assault & Family Violence (SAFV) Task Force Annual Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, April 27th from 11:45AM to 1:15PM at Moose Creek Catering in Pinedale. Luncheon costs $15. Reservations are recommended. Call 307-367-6305 for more information.
