Christmas tree and firewood price change on the Bridger-Teton
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
September 27, 2011

Beginning Monday, October 3, 2011, the prices for Christmas tree permits on the Bridger-Teton National Forest will increase by five dollars.

The new price will be ten dollars for a permit to harvest a tree up to 12-feet in height. Tree permits for evergreens between 12 – 25-feet will be $15.00 and any tree over 25-feet will require a $25.00 permit.

Forest Supervisor Jacque Buchanan approved the price increase because the increase in funds generated from the sale of the permits will help pay for the personnel at the Forest Offices that issue the permits. Prices for Christmas tree permits have remained the same on the Bridger-Teton National Forest for the past twelve years.

A maximum of five Christmas tree permits can be sold to one individual.

Additionally, the Bridger-Teton will adjust the prices for firewood permits effective January 1, 2012. The forest presently sells firewood permits for 4 cords of fuel wood for $20.00. The new price effective the first of the new year will be 5 cords of wood for $20.00 which is a price drop of one dollar per cord. There will be a 5-cord minimum, and a 10-cord maximum limit in place with these new prices.

A permit is needed to cut Christmas Trees or firewood on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Permits can be purchased from forest offices beginning October 1 of each year.

Fees from Firewood Permits are used for funding projects through the National Forest Foundation; funding the salaries of Timber & Forest Health Specialists; reducing residual slash build-up from firewood cutting; and maintaining popular firewood cutting roads. When gathering firewood, permits allow for the harvest of down or standing dead wood only. All wood gathered must be kept to a length of 8-feet or less.

Cutting or removal of forest products is prohibited in campgrounds, summer home sites, administrative sites (guard stations), ski areas, Cache Creek Canyon near Jackson, the Snake River Canyon, designated Wilderness or Wilderness Study Areas, and elk feed grounds.
