The wildlife of Sublette County outnumbers people many times over and signs of their activities are everywhere. Learn about the wild animals in our backyard during an informative lecture series, Making Tracks at the Library, to be held at the Sublette County Library at 155 S Tyler Ave at 6:30 pm on Thursdays evenings in January.
On January 5th wildlife biologist Gary Fralick, who has worked with Wyoming Game and Fish Department for 25 years, will be talking about the Sublette moose herd - one of the largest Shiras moose populations in North America.
In 1993, Fralick became the South Jackson Wildlife Biologist. This district encompasses the area from the National Elk Refuge on the north, to LaBarge Creek on the south, and from the Green River south of Daniel west to the Wyoming- Idaho state line. Enclosed within this geographical area is the Noble Basin and Plains Exploration and Production (PXP) project area.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department initiated a moose tracking project to provide baseline information on the survival of cow moose prior to energy development along with information on the movement and habitat selection of moose prior to energy development because of the proposed PXP project in Noble Basin. The Department, in cooperation with the University of Wyoming and Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, seized an opportunity to assess the potential impacts of energy development on moose with the support of then Governor Freudental and current Governor Mead.
Fralick said his interests in this project are multi-faceted. "First and foremost is to better understand, and attempt to answer, the fundamental ecological and demographic questions pertaining to moose that live in an area that may be intensively developed; and, secondly work with the various groups, agencies, and people who have a vested interest in learning more about one of the largest Shiras moose populations in North America - the Sublette moose herd".
