Balancing keeping the public safe and spending money effectively by Pinedale Online! December 22, 2011 Are you flying during the holiday season? Vanity Fair has an interesting article looking at the tremendous cost and inconvenience of airport security compared to the actual benefit of making travel safer and catching terrorists plotting to do harm. The article says since the attacks on 9/11, the U.S. has spent more than $1.1 trillion on homeland security. The article suggests the vast cost has had only infinitesimal benefit and is designed more to give the appearance of creating a safer system, but is little more than "security theater", actions that accomplish nothing. "Since 9/11, Islamic terrorists have killed just 17 people on American soil… during that same time, 200 times as many Americans drowned in their bathtubs. Still more were killed by driving their cars into deer." Click on this link for the full article: Smoke Screening By Charles Mann, Dec. 20, 2011 |
