The Sublette County Conservation District nominated Dawn Ballou for the Wyoming Association of Conservation District’s (WACD) Outstanding Conservation News Reporter for 2011. Dawn was selected by WACD for this award. The award was given at the WACD annual convention held in Lander, Wyoming on November 16th. Dawn received congratulatory letters from both Wyoming Senator Enzi and Barrasso.
The following is the nomination submitted by the Sublette County Conservation District:
Outstanding Conservation News Reporter: Dawn Ballou, Pinedaleonline
Meetings/events attended to cover district/ag/natural resource news: Pinedale Anticline Working Group (PAWG), WYDEQ including water and air quality, Green River Valley Cattlemen’s, SCCD district sponsored (AFO/CAFO, Environmental Stewardship Award), Weed&Pest, Sublette County Fair
Other civic/community involvement: Dawn manages Pinedaleonline, a web based site, where local events (Green River Rendezvous, Farmer’s Market), meetings (school board, Sublette County Commissioners), local, state & federal government updates, community calendar, yearly event calendar and other items are listed daily and archived for future reference. Dawn posts issues regarding EPA regulation updates, USFS, WYGF and BLM planning. This website also has a local business directory linked with the chamber of commerce and recreational opportunities (wilderness trailheads, fishing reports, NRCS SnoTel sites, road & flooding conditions).
Dawn is a strong supporter of the Sublette County Conservation District and its endeavors to promote and protect Sublette County’s water, soil and air quality. Dawn makes a conscience effort to attend meetings with regard to natural resource issues within the county and if the district is involved she contacts district staff to ensure the topics will be reported correctly.
Currently she and district staff are working to develop a webpage for easy public access to ground and surface water quality information. Dawn has been in the field with the surface water staff so she has a firsthand understanding of some of the district’s activities.
Dawn welcomes articles for placement on PinedaleOnline and maintains a community calendar as well. This as a free service to the community. Her goal has been to present topics of interest in a user friendly format so the general public can keep abreast of the latest news.
Dawn is an active community member that sincerely cares that the truth is presented in the media. The Sublette County Conservation District would like to nominate Dawn Ballou as the WACD Outstanding News Reporter for 2011.
