The 17th annual International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race takes place January 27 through February 4, 2012. The largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states begins in Jackson, Wyo., and travels through small Wyoming communities before finishing in Park City, Utah. The 9-day race stops in Jackson, Lander, Pinedale/Cora, Alpine, Big Piney/Marbleton, Evanston, Mountain View, Lyman and Park City, Utah. Twenty-two teams participated in the 2012 race. Teams came from Wyoming, Michigan, Alaska, Utah, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine, Canada and Scotland.
Pedigree® Food for Dogs is the title sponsor of the IPSSSDR. The Pedigree® brand actively supports a wide range of programs that promote responsible pet ownership and highlight the contributions dogs make to society. Animal shelters in each of the towns along the 2012 International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) route received a year’s worth of food for one dog provided by Pedigree® Food for Dogs. The Town of Pinedale Animal Shelter was very thankful to receive that donation.
The race also promotes childhood immunizations, in remembrance of the 1925 sled dog relay effort to get serum to people in Nome, Alaska for a diphtheria epidemic, in which sled dog team running no more than 100 mile segments, relayed the serum package 674 miles from Anchorage.
Sublette County hosts two IPSSSDR stages over three days in Pinedale and in Big Piney/Marbleton. Each stage hosts a banquet for the mushers and community the evening the teams get into town, and then race the following day. The Pinedale Stage Stop was January 29 & 30. The Big Piney/Marbleton Stage Stop was January 30 & 31.
The Start and Finish for the Pinedale Stage race was the Upper Green snowmobile parking lot along the Green River at the forest boundary for the Bridger-Teton National Forest on Hwy 352.
Shell Exploration and Production was the primary sponsor for the Pinedale Banquet. Encana sponsored the Junior Mushers. Many local businesses paid to be banner sponsors. The teams carried the banners on their sleds as they raced. Each banner was signed by all the mushers, and the sponsoring business get to keep their banner.
The International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race was founded in 1996 by Sublette County resident Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public.
