Talk about the Trapper’s Point Over and Underpasses
by Sublette County Library
January 10, 2012

It’s hard to ignore the immense overpass and six foot fences greeting drivers as they approach Pinedale. On Thursday, January 19th at 6:30 pm, the Sublette County Library, at 155 S. Tyler Ave in Pinedale, invites you to join Resident Engineer, Pete Hallsten of Wyoming Department of Transportation, and Wyoming Game & Fish Wildlife Management Coordinator, Scott Smith, for an informative talk on the Wyoming Statewide Habitat Connectivity Initiative (wildlife fence project) and the antelope and deer migration routes.

"The Wyoming Statewide Habitat Connectivity Initiative is an effort to maintain, improve and restore seasonal range connectivity for many species of wildlife at various key points in Wyoming," said Hallsten. "This will be accomplished by WYDOT and aided by their partners - constructing fences, overpasses and underpasses along with related improvements to allow wildlife to traverse highway rights-of way safely".

The initiative involves improvements in six areas around the state, including sections of US HWY 191, US Hwy 189, and Interstate 80.

Wildlife Management Coordinator, Scott Smith, has been with the Wyoming Game & Fish Department for more than 25 years. He will add to the evening’s informative discussion by talking about the deer pronghorns who undertake one of the longest known land-animal migrations in the lower 48 states.

Each spring and fall thousands of pronghorns and deer cross the highway at Trapper’s Point, six miles west of Pinedale. When the overpass construction is complete cars will drive through a tunnel while the animals run safely over a wide grass-covered bridge.

Next Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 pm the Wyoming Humanities Council is sponsoring local author Cat Urbigkit’s lecture: Public Attitudes about Wolves. She will trace public attitudes about wolves from historic eras of western development to contemporary times.
