April 5, 2012
Through generous grants from The Daniels Fund and the Trover family trust, Sublette County 4-H will be hosting its fourth year of the Youth Business Ventures Contest. This contest is open to any youth ages 8 (by Jan 1, 2009) to 18 in Sublette County. Youth do not have to be 4-H members to compete in the contest. The Daniel’s Fund grant was provided to the Wyoming State 4-H Program to support workforce preparation and career development educational efforts.
The Youth Business Ventures Contest provides an opportunity for youth to develop and present a business plan for competition for seed money to start a new business or to grow an existing business. The purpose of the contest is to; encourage youth to develop an entrepreneurial mindset that will benefit them in future career opportunities, help youth learn the process of developing business plans, provide an avenue for youth to practice and develop effective verbal communication, encourage goal setting and determination of a course of action that will assist them to accomplish goals and to provide monetary awards for successful plans.
The contest will consist of two parts; a written business plan and a presentation of their plan to a committee detailing the type of business, major components of the business, and marketing strategies. Business plans deemed to have merit by the committee may be awarded up to $1000.00. Several youth in the community have received funding from this program in the past and were able to begin successful businesses. Past winners include; Preston Dickerson (Preston’s Lawn Care), Brookely Schamber (No Worries Animal Care), the Eaton Family (Show Pigs from the Farm), Jake Hathaway (Jake Wash), Joe Anspach (Joe’s Fresh Eggs) and Ginger and Aspen Shenefelt (Totally Awesome Sweet Treats) and Conor Sullivan (Lazy River Fishing Co., LLC).
