Joel Salatin set as keynote speaker for Localfest 2012

Sublette Local Food Alliance, the host of LocalFest 2012, confirmed today, that Joel Salatin will be the Keynote Speaker at the Annual LocalFest 2012, May 21-26. Joel Salatin was featured in the movies Food, Inc and Fresh and the best-selling book Omnivore’s Dilemna by Michael Pollan. Salatin is the renowned author of Folks, This Ain’t Normal and Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal. Most importantly, Joel Salatin is a self-proclaimed grass farmer on his Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia raising beef, pork and poultry holistically. His unconventional farming practices have drawn attention from the alternative agriculture community, especially those interested in sustainable livestock management.
Folks, This Ain't Normal will be the focus of Salatin's keynote address on May 25th. A Supper, with Joel and Gala, Reception hosted by Slow Food of the Tetons, featuring regional foods, beer and music is planned.
LocalFest 2012 will also feature workshops and presentations by NRCS staff, UW Extension teachers, Wyoming Master Gardeners, and regional farmers on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 24-26. Topics will include alternative energy, short season vegetable gardening at altitude, garden records, no-till gardens, greenhouse vegetables, mushrooms, medicinal herbs, fermented foods, food preservation, backyard chickens, marketing your backyard veggies, windbreaks, willow basket weaving and more. A special Rancher Series will be held on Saturday featuring Succession Planning, 2012 Farm Bill & Grant Program, and Marketing Your Beef Locally.
Additionally, the Sublette Local Food Alliance will host a FilmFest featuring documentary films related to Local Food Production, Local Foodsheds and Food Emancipation. Films will be held May 21-26.
The first Pinedale Farmers Market of the season will be held Saturday, May 26th at the Pinedale Library. The LocalFest 2012 Expo will be held Thursday, May 24 from 5 to 9pm, Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26 from 9am to 9pm. Local and regional businesses and organizations are urged to host activities and participate in LocalFest 2012. Expo booth space is available.
