Oversize-load fees waived for drought relief hay shipments

The Wyoming Department of Transportation is waiving oversize-load fees for shipments of hay coming into the state as part of the drought disaster relief effort.
The waiver took effect Monday (August 27) and will continue until the drought disaster designations expire or until Dec. 31, when conditions will be re-evaluated.
Drivers hauling oversize hay shipments still need to call ahead to Wyoming ports of entry to get permission to enter the state, and then stop at the nearest port to ensure they are complying with all safety regulations before they proceed.
The drivers need clearance to travel through the state to make sure the route they travel can safely accommodate their load. Oversize loads can only be moved during daylight hours and they require warning flags and signs be attached to the load.
The fee waiver does not apply to overweight loads, because in those cases some of the hay can be offloaded to make the weight legal.
Gov. Matt Mead requested federal agricultural disaster designations for 22 of Wyoming’s 23 counties.
