The Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management are planning to complete heavy trail maintenance during August and early September on the first three miles of Scab Creek Trail #7110.
This trail is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Pinedale, Wyoming and serves as a primary access to the Bridger Wilderness and Scab Creek Wilderness Study Area.
The primary objective of this project is to address hazardous trail conditions associated with outsloped granite rock slabs within the steepest sections of trail known locally as "Struggle-up Mountain". This slab rock is especially slick and difficult to navigate for equine stock.
This project will include minor, low-volume blasting by certified blasters employed by the Forest Service. This minor blasting is needed to create a more stable trail surface within steeper sections of trail. The blasting portion of this project is expected to be completed in August.
The Scab Creek Trail will remain open to the public throughout the blasting phase of this project, with delays of 30 minutes to 1 hour expected when blasting is in progress. No blasting will occur on Saturdays or Sundays.
Volunteers from the local Mountain Man Backcountry Horsemen removed down trees on this section of the Scab Creek Trail earlier this summer and will be assisting with the remainder of this project throughout the next two months. The Montana Conservation Corps and the US Forest Service have also constructed minor features along this trail over the past two months. The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) is also assisting with this project.
Please contact the Pinedale Ranger District (307-367-4326) if you have any questions or require further information about this project.
