Stock-killing grizzly euthanized

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department euthanized a 17-year old male grizzly bear on Friday morning. The bear had been live-trapped in the Wagon Creek area of the Upper Green River region after its involvement in livestock depredations. The bear had also been involved in cattle depredations in 2006. This was the sixth grizzly bear handled in damage control operations in the Upper Green in the last month. Four of the grizzlies were relocated to other areas, and two were killed.
Those using the Upper Green and other areas of the Yellowstone ecosystem that grizzlies now inhabit are urged to follow proper safety precautions while enjoying the outdoors, including carrying bear pepper spray; keeping clean camps; hiking in groups and making noise while doing so; and compliance with area closures. If an area has been closed to human presence because of grizzly bear activity, for your own safety, conduct your outdoor activities in some other area not subject to closure.
Pinedale Online writer Cat Urbigkit happened to be in the area on Friday, and was with state officials when the grizzly was euthanized. Read her essay on the event (which appears on Stephen Bodio’s Querencia blog) by clicking on the link below.
