United Way awards grants to Sublette County
by United Way of Southwest Wyoming
August 7, 2012

United Way of Southwest Wyoming (UWSW) awarded $9,355 in community impact grants to two programs in Sublette County. The grants are awarded to programs that show measurable outcomes in three focus areas: education, health and basic needs and emergency assistance. These grants are made possible by individual and company donations given during the annual campaign.

UWSW’s education goals are to build and participate in collaborations that will decrease teen parenthood; affect a measurable increase in kindergarten readiness, third grade reading scores and graduations rates.

"To meet United Way’s health goals, United Way is building and participating in collaborations that address the oral health needs in Southwest Wyoming and working to lessen the burden of community healthcare costs. Whether it is a neighbor without health insurance, a victim of abuse or someone struggling with mental illness or an addiction, United Way is working to ensure everyone has access to affordable and quality care," said Suzanne Zutter, executive director.

Grant recipient, Sublette Center Home Health and Hospice, has outcomes that meet UWSW health initiative goals.

Under Basic Needs and Emergency Assistance, UWSW has set goals to foster an integrated set of community wide services to optimize individuals’ ability to meet their basic human needs in the areas of: food and shelter, safety, transportation and crisis services.

"In short term we need to stabilize families by finding ways for them to stay in their homes, afford utilities and make sure they have enough food. In the long term, our community will only prosper and grow if all families are financially stable," said Zutter.

Grant recipient, Sublette County Sexual Assault and Family Violence, has outcomes that meet UWSW’s basic needs and emergency assistance goals.

United Way’s campaign season begins in August and runs through March. Companies choose the time that is best for them to run a campaign. Employee contributions made up 64 percent of total contributions in 2011 with corporate gifts and special events contributing 36 percent of the $1.7 M total.

This year, UWSW’s goal is to improve the lives of 40,428 people in southwest Wyoming. The 2012 campaign, "Different Apart, United Together," kicks-off this month.

Scott Heiner, operations manager at Anadarko Petroleum Midstream and Fred von Ahrens, resident manager at FMC are taking on the roles of campaign co-chairs.

"By supporting United Way and our community-impact plan, you are changing the odds for children and families across our region. It takes a whole community working together to reach our mutual goals," said Heiner.

"This year, any person who donates $100 or more will be automatically entered to win a lime green 2010 Arctic Cat and a 2012 ramp gate trailer, made possible by FMC, K-Motive and Sports and Artctic Cat," said Zutter.
