October 14, 2012
Beginning Jan. 1, The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will begin accepting entries for the upcoming Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art competition. The ruffed grouse will be the subject for the 2013 contest. The annual event is now in its 30th year.
Each year the Game and Fish selects one species to be the subject of the competition and eventually appear on more than 100,000 conservation stamps. The winning artist also receives a cash award of $3,500. Second place receives $1,500, third $750. The competition is open to professional artists. Entries for the contest will be accepted Jan. 1- Mar. 15. The contest will culminate with judging in Cheyenne on Apr. 12, 2013. The winning artwork will appear on the 2014 Wyoming conservation stamp.
Information including rules and deadlines on the Conservation Stamp Art Contest is on the Game and Fish website wgfd.wyo.gov. Printed rules and entry forms will be available at a later date and will be mailed to requesting artists. Artists may also choose to review the rules and use the forms on the Game and Fish website.
The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is very common throughout the western forests of Wyoming and a small population is found in the Black Hills National Forest in the northeastern part of the state. Artists should be aware that ruffed grouse have two color phases, red and gray, but it is the gray phase that is found in Wyoming. Last year’s winning entry featured the greater short-horned lizard and was painted by Karla Mann of Virginia Beach, Va. Mann’s artwork will appear on the 2013 Conservation Stamp.
