Fall Fly Fishing Report for Pinedale area – Oct. 10, 2012

The streams in Sublette County are as low as we have seen them in quite some time. Drift boat fishing is extremely challenging and is limited to the lower sections of the Upper Green. Walk/wade fishing opportunities are good on all our streams since the lower fall water flows have isolated the good holes and runs where the trout usually congregate. You need to have your casting stroke in good shape to present the fly correctly on calm, sunny days. The water temperatures have cooled and the fish are actively feeding. The Brown trout have become more active as they prepare to commence spawning and the Rainbows are also feeding well.

We are getting some surface action on the New Fork and Green Rivers when the cloud cover and wind conditions are just right. The trout are still very interested in large terrestrial patterns like hoppers, bugmeisters and PMX’s. It is always a good idea to trail these surface flies with a nymph pattern, sizes 14-16. When the sun is high during mid-day, the fish may tend to hug the bottom of the deeper holes and can be enticed into a strike by offering them a large mouthful of various colored woolly buggers and other large streamer patterns. These patterns also seem to work well in some of our local lakes. The trout will respond well to smaller nymph and egg patterns if they are dead drifted deep in front of their noses. If the temperature warms up to the mid-forties in the afternoon and the wind and cloud cover are right, we experience a BWO and Caddis hatch. This brings feeding trout to the surface, giving the surface anglers a great thrill.

Fly fishing remains generally good, but the angler must be prepared to practice a little winter survival on occasion when a front moves into the area. This will occur more frequently as winter approaches.
