Domestic Violence Awareness Month October 2012 Proclamation
Whereas, domestic violence is a serious crime that affects women, men, and children of all racial, social, religious, ethnic, and economic groups; and
Whereas, domestic violence is one of the most pervasive problems in our society; and
Whereas, children that grow up in violent homes have been found to be abused and neglected at a rate higher than the national average; and
Whereas, open discussion is the first step in promoting healthy relationships and overcoming domestic violence; and
Whereas, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual’s privacy, dignity, security, and humanity due to the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, and economic control and/or abuse; and
Whereas, residents of Wyoming should feel safe in their homes, their schools, and their communities; and
Whereas, only a coordinated community effort will put a stop to this heinous crime; and
Whereas, observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October -- and throughout the year -- shows our ongoing commitment to and support for victims of domestic violence, and reaffirms Wyoming’s commitment to end domestic violence against women, men, and children.
Now therefore, in recognition of the important work done by domestic violence programs, I do hereby proclaim the month of October to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urge all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs to work toward improving victim safety and holding perpetrators of domestic abuse accountable for their actions against individual victims and our society as a whole.
For these significant reasons, I, Mathew Mead, Governor of Wyoming, do hereby proclaim the month of October as "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
And I urge all citizens of Wyoming to recognize domestic violence as a critical issue because domestic violence is everyone’s business.
