The fish in the streams around Pinedale have turned their metabolism rates down to low and are expending the minimum amount of energy to forage for the reduced food supply available in the local streams. During January, February and the early part of March there is very little open water on the many flowing waterways around Pinedale so the fish do get a brief break from the fisher’s pursuit. This short rest will help the trout survive the winter and keep them in good shape for next season.

The current fishing action centers on connecting with big hungry trout by jigging some type of bait or lure through the ice on one of the many fine lakes we have in the Pinedale area. The less hardy fishers who prefer to wait until there is some open water on our local streams should concentrate on tying some of those basic fly patterns they will use next season, polishing those rusty lures and cleaning and lubricating their reels.
