A brief informational meeting will be held on Friday, January 18th in Sublette County for community stake-holders to increase their understanding of how to become involved in suicide prevention efforts. The meetings will be held:
Pinedale Library 10:00 am - 11:00 am Big Piney Library 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm Speakers will be Julie Welsh, SW Region Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the Prevention Management Organization of Wyoming and Mike Richins, Lincoln County Coroner. Mike Richins, Lincoln County Coroner, will share his experiences with suicide; and as a county Coroner, explain how each coroner in the state can make a difference in suicide prevention as well as helping families deal with suicidal issues. The coroners and funeral directors are often the first who have contact with families after a suicide. As a former funeral director, Mike has a great perspective and can offer support and understanding of what that is like. Mike is also a member of the Wyoming State Suicide Prevention Advisory Council (WYSPAC). The WYSPAC has made some great strides at moving Wyoming forward in research-based suicide prevention efforts. Julie Welsh, the Southwest Wyoming Regional Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the Prevention Management Organization of Wyoming, and also a member of the WYSPAC, will share the options for trainings such as QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Systems Training). She will also describe the purpose of and target audiences for each type of training. Statistics for suicide in Wyoming will be presented and hopefully encourage everyone in attendance to become involved. Sublette County can reduce the stigma associated with suicide and eventually reduce the numbers of attempted and completed suicides in Sublette County and Wyoming. After a short presentation, the presenters will answer questions and offer resources for both communities. Our desire is to begin developing a local coalition or task force that is dedicated to preventing suicide in our community. There is a role for everyone to play! This informational meeting is open to anyone and free of charge. Your input and education for our community will be greatly appreciated and valued!
