Turtle Island Quartet in Pinedale Feb. 19
Bring sounds of Coltrane, Hendrix to Pinedale
by Pinedale Fine Arts Council
February 8, 2013
The Pinedale Fine Arts Council is proud to present the two-time Grammy Award winning Turtle Island Quartet live in concert Tuesday, February 19 at 7 p.m. in the Pinedale Auditorium.
The group will be performing selections from their Grammy® Award-Winning album "A Love Supreme" - an ode to the John Coltrane album of the same name. The brilliance of Coltrane’s epic opus goes untouched, while the work is simultaneously transformed and given new meaning. Coltrane lovers need not fear, the Turtles work their usual magic and preserve while injecting life into "A Love Supreme." In addition to Coltrane, the group will also perform string arrangements of Jimi Hendrix tunes.
One of the most salient comments about Turtle Island Quartet’s category-defying music comes from innovative cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who said that the group, formed in 1985, performs with "a unified voice that truly breaks new ground—authentic and passionate—a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today."
Co-founder and cellist Mark Summer adds that the uniqueness of this par excellence string quartet is that not only are all the group members accomplished in the classical music world, but also that they "are all jazz players…we all improvise, we all swing."
Ticket prices for the Feb. 19 performance are $13 for adults and $7 for students (kids under the age of 5 are free). Tickets are on sale now at Rock Rabbit, Pine Street Floral & Gifts, The Cowboy Shop, Office Outlets, Isabel Jewelry, the Big Piney Library and at the door the night of the performance ($2 extra).
The Turtle Island String Quartet live in Pinedale is presented by the Pinedale Fine Arts Council with support in part from the Wyoming Arts Council through funding from the Wyoming Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts which believes a great nation deserves great art, Sublette BOCES, SCSD #1, Western Sublette BOCES #9, the Western States Arts Federation, the Sublette County Recreation Board, the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, The Sublette Community Foundation, Shell Rocky Mountain, EnCana, BP, QEP Resources, Ultra and the Pinedale Travel and Tourism Commission.
