Jay Harnack awarded Myron Basom Educational Leadership Award
April 28, 2013
Sublette County School District #1 Superintendent, Jay Harnack was awarded the Myron Basom Educational Leadership Award at the Wyoming Association of School Administrators Annual Awards Banquet in Casper, Wyoming on Thursday, April 25th. This award originates from a nomination by a fellow superintendent and a selection process determined by the recipient’s accomplishments. This award is presented annually to a Wyoming Superintendent that has demonstrated the abilities to positively impact education significantly not only in their own district, but statewide as well. The award is based upon the belief that the superintendent selected has demonstrated, over a period of time, the characteristics that indicate true educational leadership.
The award is named after an Educational Leadership Department Professor that taught 30 years at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Basom also served as a past Executive Director of both the Wyoming Association of School Administrators and the Wyoming School Boards Association.
Harnack is in his third year as Superintendent in Sublette County School District #1. During his tenure, Sublette County School District #1 opened the first public-private Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station in Wyoming operated by a school district. He started the process of converting the district's bus fleet to CNG in an effort to reduce transportation costs for the school district and improve local air quality. The public station currently serves local residents and the fleet vehicles of the gas companies that work in the area.
Under Jay's leadership, $270,000 was raised to privately fund an alternative setting for at-risk students for two years while working with legislators to end the statewide moratorium on alternative schools. Jay was instrumental in getting the alternative school moratorium issued as an interim study topic with the legislature.
Sublette #1 has also started a statewide Autism Family Conference dedicated to helping educate and provide support for autistic students, their families, and educators.
