Ask Flora - Sublette County Fair
July 2013
by Sage & Snow Garden Club
July 16, 2013

Let's "Stirrup Some Fun" & go to the Sublette County Fair July 22-28! The questions I've received are about how to enter flowers, vegetables, & more, so here goes. Don't forget, though, that there are many, many different competitions & activities that you can participate in at the Fair, including entering your plants.

Dear Flora,
Who can I get advice from about entering flowers in the Fair?
Signed, Iris Brown

Dear Iris,
The Sage & Snow Garden Club has been involved with the Fair for many years. Why don't you come to our next meeting & ask your questions? We meet on the third Tuesday of the month: July 16. Educational topics will include Tree Diseases & Pests. We gather at the Sublette County Weed & Pest Office at 12 South Bench Road, Pinedale. Social time is at 4:30 P.M., followed by a short business session at 5:00 P.M. To find out more about the Garden Club & read all Ask Flora articles, visit our website at www.sageandsnow.org. You can also call Club officers Jeanne (307-367-4212) or Doris (307-367-6512) to talk about specific projects you can get involved in.

Dear Flora,
Is there a deadline for entering flowers & vegetables at the Fair?
Signed, Jim Beene

Dear Jim,
Judging is at noon on July 24 at the Sublette County Fairgrounds on Highway 189 (just before you reach Big Piney). Entries must be in by 11 am that day. Unless you are entering hay, I suggest you wait until July 24 to bring your plants, so they are fresh for the judge. I also suggest that you pre-enter online at www.sublettecountyfair.com or mail your entry form to Sublette County Fair, PO Box 1072, Big Piney, WY 83113. You can get a Fair Book at the Sublette County Extension Office. There is no penalty for entering something on the form & not bringing it on July 24.

Dear Flora,
Can I enter vegetables at the Fair?
Signed, Radicia Jones

Dear Radicia,
Yes, you can see all the categories of plants that are eligible in the Fair Book or online. The categories are sheaf forage hay, baled forages, fruits & vegetables grown outside, vegetable plants (windowsill), vegetable plants (greenhouse), cut flowers, greenhouse, floral arrangements, & potted plants. There are specific criteria for each category (such as 5 radishes constitute one entry & clear glass bottles for cut flowers) so make sure you look at those before you enter.

Dear Flora,
Does it cost anything to enter?
Signed, Penny Pincher

Dear Penny,
No, there is no entry fee for Floriculture & Horticulture entries. In fact, if your entry is a winner, you may receive up to $5 per entry plus a ribbon.

Dear Flora,
My neighbor won the People's Choice Award last year. How can I enter?
Signed, Mary Worthington

Dear Mary,
This award is a vote by the public for which entry among all the Floriculture & Horticulture entries is their favorite (yes, delphiniums & daisies compete with zucchini & radishes!). The ballots will be counted on July 27 & the results should be available on the Fair's website & the newspapers.
