Middle Piney Lake Road inaccessible
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
June 19, 2014
Middle Piney Lake Road is currently inaccessible to full size vehicles on the Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Early this spring an avalanche occurred on the north slope of Middle Piney Lake that deposited large amounts of snow, trees and other debris over the Middle Piney Lake Road area near the outlet of the lake. Currently there are still large quantities of snow and debris in the roadway and parking lot, making the area inaccessible.
Road crews and engineering staff are working to remove debris and clear the area to provide access to vehicle traffic. Heavy equipment is currently working on the very muddy road. Middle Piney Lake Campground is closed at this time.
There is no date established to reopen the entire Middle Piney Lake Road, but the district is expecting to provide access across the dam and into the parking lot by next week.
The heavy snowpack and runoff this spring has created many other road condition issues that are occurring on the district and across the Forest. The Big Piney Ranger District urges caution to the public as the avalanche area may still be unstable. Driving over this type of debris could result in damage to your vehicle or serious personal injury.
