BIG PINEY – The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest will be offering free-use firewood permits for Middle Piney Lake beginning Monday, July 7.

A 2013 avalanche deposited a large amount of trees in the lake. Efforts have been ongoing to remove the debris so it will not impede the flow of water from the lake. The wood is wet and green and is located on the face of the dam. Visitors to the lake as well as firewood collectors are asked to yield to heavy equipment working in the area. The Middle Piney Lake Road is one lane and very narrow past the bridge. Reduce speed and use extreme caution while driving to the lake.

There is no cost for the firewood but a valid free-use firewood permit is required. These permits may be obtained at the Big Piney District Office between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Individuals are limited to four cords of free-use firewood per year. If you have already been issued a free-use firewood permit this season you will not be eligible for additional permits.

Individuals with a valid personal use firewood permit will also be allowed to gather firewood from this area however no mechanical permits will be available.

Firewood cutters are reminded that all firewood removed from the National Forest requires a valid Forest Service firewood permit and each load is required to be properly tagged before the wood is removed from the Forest.
