Flag half-staff notice April 15th – Abraham Lincoln Day of Remembrance

Governor Matthew H. Mead, pursuant to President Barack Obama’s Day of Remembrance Proclamation for President Abraham Lincoln, has ordered that both the U.S. flag and the State of Wyoming flag be flown at half-staff statewide from sunrise to sundown on Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

Editor’s Note: April 15th, "A Day of Remembrance," commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the assassination of the nation’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. On April 14, 1865, Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth slipped into Ford's Theatre in Washington and shot Lincoln as he watched a live stage performance. Lincoln died the following morning on April 15th, less than a week after the end of the Civil War. Lincoln became the first American president killed in office. Booth fled the building and evaded the authorities for nearly two weeks before finally being shot and killed during capture in Virginia on April 26. Four other people were hanged for their involvement in the plot, including Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the federal government. Three were sentenced to life in prison. Ford's Theatre remained closed for more than a century, but today houses a permanent museum focused on Lincoln and the assassination. It also still operates as a performance venue.
Flag etiquette: When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Thursday, April 16th.
