Lake ice update, Saturday, January 2, 10PM: Report from Joe Zuback: We fished Half Moon Lake on Saturday. Found 7" of good hard ice around the boat ramp area. I heard of 3-4" on Fremont with a big crack of open water forming on Saturday morning. Be careful out there. __________________________________________ Original post 12/28/15: We’ve just started to get a string of really cold weather to start the bigger lakes freezing over, but most still have a lot of open water and what ice is there is extremely thin. The big lakes still need a couple more weeks of really cold weather to build up thick enough ice to be safe for ice fishing Dollar Lake in the Upper Green is the only lake reported frozen over now for ice fishing. Here is the latest report as of Monday morning, December 28th:
Dollar Lake: Frozen. Access is by snowmachine. The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail is being groomed over to Dubois now. For nearby services, Kendall Valley Lodge is open with plowed roads and parking lot. They are open for drop-ins for meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, open 8AM to 8PM. They also offer lodging, www.kendallvalleylodge.com, 307-367-2223.
Boulder Lake: Reported to be marginally frozen on the lower end from boat ramp to dam at outlet. Still a lot of open water on the lake. Some people have been seen fishing the lower end. Be extremely cautious venturing out on what ice is there.
Green River Lakes: Starting to freeze. Still a lot of open water, what ice is there is thin. We’ve heard reports that conditions are "fair" at the lake, but be extremely cautious out on the ice. Note that this lake appears to have some underwater thermals in places that impact how the ice freezes on this lake. The Green River head end still has open flowing water. Snowmobile access to the lake.
Fremont, Willow, Half Moon: Just started to freeze this past week. Still a lot of open water, what ice is there is very thin coverage. Not recommended to go out on ice yet. Wait a couple of weeks to let the ice layer get thicker.

Many of our area lakes are only accessible by snowmobile in the winter months. The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail is being groomed over to Dubois now. Backcountry reported to have waist deep snow (2-4 feet), but is bare and wind-blown on the open ridges. Watch out for rocks and brush sticking up for backcountry riding. Snow is sugary soft and varies from shallow to deep in places. SNOTEL reports (snow depth data).
