‘10,000 Years in Ten Days’ archaeology program Jan. 19
Original post January 6, 2016 | Updated January 20, 2016
The Upper Green River Basin Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society (WAS) will hold their next regular meeting on Tuesday, January 19th at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale. There will be a short business meeting at 6:30PM to do their election of new officers for the year.
Special guest speaker for the evening will be John P. Laughlin, Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Mr. Laughlin has spent 15 years working in cultural resources for the State of Wyoming. His research interests include high altitude archaeology, the colonization of North America, and lithic technology.
He will give a program entitled "10,000 Years in Ten Days: Archaeological Work on the Moriah Ranch, Albany County, Wyoming." The Moriah Ranch was purchased by the state in 2012 and at that time only one archaeological site was known to exist within its borders. A three-day work session there in the fall of 2012 by Rich Adams indicated that the ranch contained a large number of archaeological sites, and they were relatively undisturbed. In 2013, the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office received a Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund grant (in partnership with the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University, and the full support of the Office of State Lands and Investments) to perform archaeological work on the ranch. In August 2013, a crew of 11 students and approximately nine volunteers and instructors spent ten days doing reconnaissance survey on the ranch. Thirty nine archaeological sites spanning 10,000 years of prehistory were recorded along with several isolates.
Everyone welcome. Members, annual dues for the year can be paid at the meeting. New members can join. Individual membership is $20, family membership is $25. If you cannot make it to the meeting, dues can be mailed to WAS, PO Box 412, Pinedale, WY 82941. More information can be found at www.sublette.com/was.
