Wolf Harvest
Idaho’s harvest of wolves in the 2015-2016 hunting/trapping season includes 137 killed through hunting, and 122 through trapping, similar to last year’s take. Montana's recent harvest included 137 wolves killed through hunting, and 73 through trapping. Wolves in Idaho and Montana were removed from federal protection in May 2011.
Mexican Wolf
The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service has reached a lawsuit settlement agreement with environmental groups over Mexican wolf recovery, agreeing to develop a recovery plan by Nov. 30, 2017. The agreement, which is opposed by agricultural groups that intervened in the lawsuit, now goes to a federal judge for approval. The lawsuit was filed by Earthjustice, representing Defenders of Wildlife, Center for Biological Diversity, and other wolf advocacy organizations.
There are less than 100 Mexican wolves in the wild, and federal management of the species continues to be highly controversial. Federal officials recently placed two captive-bred wolf pups into the den of a wild wolf in New Mexico in a process called cross-fostering. New Mexico wildlife officials continue to contest federal wildlife actions in the state.
