Lava Mountain Fire Burning northwest of Dubois on the Shoshone National Forest on the east side of the northern Wind River Mountains.

The Lava Mountain Fire is burning 20 miles northwest of Dubois on the Wind River Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest, on the east side of the Wind River Mountain Range, in thick timber. The fire was caused by lighting and smoke was first reported on Sunday, July 10th, a week before the Cliff Creek Fire started. Firefighters walked the area and made several flights. However, for the first few days, crews were unable to locate the fire due to its lack of size and visible smoke. On July 16th the fire grew to around 250 acres due to increased temperatures and wind. At that time, additional resources were ordered and a Type 2 Incident Management Team was deployed to Dubois.

As of Thursday, July 21st, the Lava Creek Fire was at 1,200 acres. Residences from Big Diamond Ranch to Double Bar J Ranch are currently evacuated. All residences from the Lava Mountain Lodge to Falls Creek Campground should be set to leave in the event of additional evacuations. Highway 26 is currently open and is being used as one of the detour routes by people who want to get from Jackson and Yellowstone Park over to the Pinedale area due to the closure of US 191/189 through Hoback Canyon due to the much larger Cliff Creek fire. The Union Pass Road is still currently open.

NOTICE TO CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL HIKERS: A portion of the Continental Divide Trail from Pilot Knob to Sheridan Pass is now closed due to the Lava Mountain Fire.
