Town of Pinedale update – Town water

Contrary to rumor, the Town water system does not contain lead. The EPA requires that we conduct lead & copper testing on homes built before 1989. Lead has been discovered in some of these buildings in the past. It is important to note that the lead is in the homes, not in the Town’s water system. I would like to point out the Town has passed these EPA tests ever since a failure in 2009. The 2009 failure was not because of lead in Town water, it was due to lead inside houses.
Our testing this year involved 20 properties, 18 houses and 2 schools. All homes except one had no lead or lead below the EPA action levels. One home and the school exceeded EPA limits. The home had a faucet that contained lead. It was replaced and the lead levels dropped into safe levels. The school is evaluating their plumbing system and formulating a plan.
The Town feels it is very important that we all have faith and trust in our water system. We have offered free lead testing to all the preschools in Town. That testing has already begun. We are working out the details of a free testing program for homes built prior to 1989. Details of this program will be posted on our website as soon as they are finalized. If you feel you are at risk for lead contained in your home please visit the EPA website and search for "Lead in Drinking Water." That site contains tips for minimizing your exposure. These tips are also posted on the Town website on the Lead Information page. Again, the Town water supply is safe. The lead showing up on the tests is not from our Town water supply.
I would also like to remind you to make sure you have your bleeder turned on. Our water and sewer rate includes 40,000 gallons of water so you can bleed without a large increase in your bill.
