Skiers disappointed with the closing of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort at Teton Village can turn to White Pine Ski Resort, Pinedale just 80 miles south of Jackson. White Pine has experienced no power outages this week. Heavy snowfall during the 2016/17 winter season has provided almost 200" fresh powder since monitoring began in late November.
White Pine, a small friendly "Mom and Pop" operation is open to the public 4 days a week, (Friday through Monday), welcomes both skiers and snowboarders and provides two fixed triple chair lifts servicing 350 skiable acres with a 1,200’ rise from 8,400’ at the base. From the top of the mountain, skiers enjoy fabulous views of the Wind River Range before choosing a descent via one of 27 downhill runs. The mountain offers a good balance of beginner through more difficult trails as well as a small terrain park with jumps and slides.
Adult day lift tickets are $48, students $36. During weekends, White Pine opens the tubing hill with a 225’ slide with a 50’ vertical drop. Guests are pulled up the hill via a handle tow lift. Open noon til 4pm, the price for unlimited rides is $20.
White Pine’s base area facilities include a full-service lodge with ski/snowboard rental, Ski School, a Grill/Restaurant and a well stocked bar. Over 30% of the terrain is beginner slopes, with ski school lead Ward Wise focusing on a "6 simple teaching steps" to get those new to the sport moving quickly.
Travelers from Jackson to Pinedale are not faced with driving over a treacherous mountain pass; the state highway follows the Hoback River through a canyon. Over the last two summers, contractors completed a $10m road widening, straightening and resealing project making easy driving from Pinedale to the ski area.
Although open to the public four days a week, White Pine can be booked by a private party on any other day (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and have full access to the mountain. There is no limit to the number in a private group, the price to open the mountain is $3,000.00.
