Museum of the Mountain Man opens May 1 for summer season
April 28, 2017
The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale opens Monday, May 1st for the summer season. They will be open daily from 9AM to 5PM during the summer, May 1 through October 31. The upper level of the Museum tells the history of the Rocky Mountain fur trade of the early 1800s. The Upper Green River Valley was integral to that story.
The Museum is proud to present two new exhibits downstairs. "A Day in the Life" takes visitors time traveling through Pinedale, Wyoming. "Denizens: Wildlife on the Western Frontier" is an exhibition of vintage engravings from 1770-1902.
Outside on the grounds of the Museum visitors can enjoy the log cabins of "Old Pinedale," including long-time local Madge Funk’s log cabin, an old trapper cabin, the Fardy cabin, the "Queen of the Green" log river raft, and a beautifully restored sheep wagon. To the south is a reproduction of a Crow Sun Dance Lodge that was found in the Pinedale area (before the town existed) when the Astorian Party came through in 1812. A historical marker on US 191 on Pine Creek in the American Legion Park tells more about this story. On the north side of the Museum grounds, visitors can enjoy a walk around the grounds to see tipis, primitive shelters, as well as a beaver fur press, of the kind used by mountain men.
The Museum of the Mountain Man is operated by the Sublette County Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) private, non-profit foundation. The Sublette County Historical Society is the oldest historical society in the state of Wyoming. Admission to the Museum is $10 for age 13 and above, $8 for Senior Citizens, children 12 and under are free. The Museum has an elevator for handicap accessibility and also has a gift shop.
